Travel Stories and New Eyes

Appeared: September 21, 2020

Bonjour! My name is Percy, and I’m filled with travel feelings after visiting my grandparents in Saint-Émilion. I love traveling, especially because I get to see new places and meet all kinds of people. I feel and look a little different than before the trip, if you know what I mean. It’s like I have new eyes (which I actually do...story to follow!). My grandparents, I call them Mimi and Pépé, showed me all around their town and introduced me to their friends. Everyone was so nice…I got one kiss on each cheek from every person I met! Some of the streets in their town are more than 700 years old, and they’re made of stone. My bicycle jingled so wildly over the bumps that an orange bounced out of my basket, skipped across the street, and bumped awake a sleeping dog! Mimi and Pépé took me to a very special place in the countryside where their best friend lives. He makes wine from all the grapes growing in his backyard. We walked through the vineyard, and he showed us how to taste the grapes to see if they were ripe enough for picking. I may have eaten a few too many because my eyes turned purple! I don’t mind; in fact, I like my new eyes. I can see more, in a deeper, zoomed-in kind of way, and it makes me feel more connected to everything. My hair style has also changed since the trip! Pépé taught me how to give my hair the same swerve as he has. His hair is several shades of silver, and when the sun hits it, it shines like Mimi’s teapot. Every morning, I comb Pépé’s swerve in my hair and double check it in a nearby leaf that cups the morning dew. I can feel Mimi and Pépé close to me then, and that makes me happy and also a little sad. ***** Some questions for cultivation: Do memories sometimes make you both happy and sad? Which memory is it? Sit with it and see if it has more to tell you. Think back to a time when you traveled for a few days or more…when you got back home, how did you feel? Did anything or anyone (including you!) feel or look different to you? What’s a favorite travel story you love to remember and tell?

The question at the end of Sunny's story stopped me in my tracks. Still thinking about it.
